The role of technology in the tutoring business is not to supplant the tutor, but rather to support and automate the business of tutoring. Let's take a look at a modern tutoring company both in-center or in-home. Here is the typical work flow.
Take a parent's phone call. New clients are usually the result of a recommendation from a current or past client. Because the tutor / student relationship is built on trust, recommendations are by far the most common way to gain new business. Parents and students know this so they seek out recommendations from trusted friends. The first challenge for an education center is capturing the parent and student information and recording the parent's concerns and objectives. The intake must gathering key data about the student, including current and past performance, challenges and motivation.
Schedule the student. Most tutoring companies are staffed by tutors with unique availabilities, varied qualifications, and schedules that change daily. This leads to a scheduling headache at best if not a scheduling nightmare.
Communicate information to the tutor. If the parent is going to pay hefty hourly fees, they want to make sure that the tutor has the information needed to work with their child. Making all information necessary to properly tutor a student available to the tutor is critical.
Record the results of tutoring sessions. What happened during the session in detail. Is the student progressing? Does the tutor need assistance? Are there ares the student needs to work on.
Communicate progress to the parent. Tutors and students have ample time to communicate. However, parents are not always available to talk between sessions. Many times students drive themselves to sessions, or the parent charged with managing the student's education is not always present.
Capture ongoing conversations with parents. What was said two weeks ago? A month ago? Are there multiple administrators in a center communicating to the parent and and those messages consistent? What has been agreed upon? What message resonated with the parent?
Handle billing. Does the parent prepay? If so, then the center has to document how many sessions were purchases and when the credits run out. At that point the center has to get the parent to pay for more. Does the parent post pay? Then the center must create invoices and statements. Figuring out what is owed can be complicated.
Handle payroll. How much does each tutor earn? How many hours did each work? Does payroll match up with the sessions paid by the parent?
Get stuff done. Who is going to follow up with a parent that needs a call back? A parent wants to discuss summer programs in two months. Who is going to call them?
There are endless ways to drop the ball in operating a tutoring center. It's enough to make one's head spin. Keeping the plates spinning was certainly not what motivated educators and entrepreneurs to start their business. Yet, that is precisely what most owners are faced with. Technology can help them pursue their passion for education and make more money doing it!
Most tutor management issues are information management which can be addressed using a variety of software applications and services. There are several choices when choosing technology to automate the business of tutoring. A solution can be assembled using separate software and online services. Centers can use a commercial online service designed for tutor management and test preparation centers. They can also design and build their own online system.

GPS Auto Tracker Technology
If you are a fleet manager for a corporation or a small business that that has delivery or service vehicles on the road each day then GPS Auto tracker technology applied correctly will save you money every day. Ever wonder why one vehicle has almost twice the miles and maintenance costs of the average vehicle in your fleet? How about a particular delivery route whose driver takes longer and has more employee overtime than then it probably should. In each case these situations are costing you money in terms of fuel efficiency, overtime and maintenance costs. So how can I better manage my transportation costs?
The answer to your questions may come from using GPS auto tracker technology. Basically there are two types of GPS tracking technology on the market today. One is commonly known as passive or logger and it has been around the longest. Passive tracking units are placed in or on a vehicle and as the vehicle travels on its route the information is logged on the unit. It basically works just like the GPS navigation systems that are so popular with the public these days. However unlike your cars navigation system GPS tracking units, Logger GPS devices record the information on to a data base. To access the information the unit must be retrieved from the vehicle and downloaded to a computer for viewing. Logging units are relatively inexpensive and are available in very small sizes that are easy to hide. They do a very good job of telling you exactly where your vehicles have been, their speed and stopped time. The problems is that the information is not in real time and you have to assign someone to collect the units and download the data then return the units to their assigned vehicles. On the positive side you have total control and access to your tracking information.
Real time GPS tracker technology is a great alternative to logging systems. Just as the name implies the information provided is relative" live" and can be view as the vehicles travel on their routes. If you are a fleet manager this has far reaching advantages. Real time GPS units use existing cell phone technology to upload the data from the vehicles tracking device to a GPS auto tracking service provider. The provider then sends the current information to your office to be viewed on a computer. Depending on the plan you have subscribed to uploaded data is updated at different time intervals. Basically the more frequent the information the more costly the service. Businesses with delivery services that also do pickups frequently ask for tracking information to be updated every 5 minutes while fleet managers that manage cross country transport only need tracking information every 30 minutes.

VDF And IPTV
IPTV represents Internet Protocol television and is a way of providing an Audio or Video signal across a digital IP network. BBC have been early investors in this technological innovation with the advent of their iPlayer.
Prior to now IPTV technology was financially unrealistic for the majority of business but, as with many other areas of technology, fees have come down and very affordable packages are now being offered by some of the major suppliers.
The amazing advantages of IPTV are now capitalised on in a good many, varied industries such as: education, health care, hospitality and corporate business. Its ability to effortlessly deliver a range of services digitally to screens, PCs laptops or TV's has significant overall appeal. Whether you have settled your hotel room bill making use of the Tv Set, looked at a digital signage screen at an airport terminal or train station or viewed a programme on the BBC's iPlayer, you have experienced the advantages of IPTV technology.
So as you can see from the above, these technological innovations might appear to be a whole heap of geeky mumbo jumbo but they are practical, day-to-day technologies, with masses to offer many sectors. They are here to stay and no doubt will progress even further with time.

Wireless Technology
Susan is a twenty nine-year old mother of two. She and her spouse manage a successful nucleus business with offices which they administer from home. She is up at 5am every morning, pops off to the gym, and makes sure she is back in time to wake up the kids and get them ready for the day that lies ahead. John, her husband, is tasked with getting the kids to their day-care while Susan quickly showers and gets busy with the first order of their business day. By the time John gets back business is in full swing. Susan has already sent out her first batch of e-mails, confirmed both of her meetings for the day, forwarded that ever-so-important proposal for the 'big-wigs' and is in the middle of the conference call with the importer that could change their lives.
Upon closer inspection the office seems sparse. True it has the harmonious flow of its Feng Shui design. The designer rug and art do make that understated statement. The minimalistic retro office furniture is suited to their profile but what is strikingly missing are the large fax machines and computers, laptops even, modems and the endless array of office equipment one would expect to see to make an office an office. Susan needs to leave to get to her first meeting on time. Things have run smoothly for the day so that she will be able to do her projections and reports just as she had hoped to do. She is on track. She picks up her keys, her handbag and her state of the art mobile phone. That's it. She goes to her meeting which runs without a hitch. She makes the presentation to the client and looks forward to the positive outcome from the effort that she has put into the project.

Electronics From Your Business
Many businesses neglect calling for a recycling company because they feel their items are too small or too large. The size of your electronics is irrelevant to their goal to protect the world. Things such as your computer's keyboard, mouse, or cord are constantly getting replaced and can easily be picked up by your local recycling services. On the other hand, some businesses have huge printers and copy machines. Their trucks are large enough to hold these items and they will gladly remove them for you. It is already a big enough pain having to purchase new equipment let alone lug a 500 pound machine to the dumpster.
Where are your business's old electronics going after being collected? Recycling companies understand that your products may contain private matters that need to be erased from existence as soon as possible. For this reason, they go directly to the recycling facility. These facilities are designed to destroy your electronics immediately to rid the risk of the wrong hands getting in touch with them. As all electronics are separated in to categories they can then destroy all the ones containing private information first. They can assure you of this and make it very simply for you to view the entire process your products went through. When they entered the facility, when they were sorted, and when they were destroyed.
Not only do recycling companies offer the convenience of picking up your old electronics, but they also allow you to drop them off yourself. When something breaks at random you may need to replace it the next day and get the old product immediately out of its place. Simply drop these items and feel confident that they will undergo the same process as if they were picked up. You can always be sure that your electronics will be safely destroyed. Recycling overall is a safe and easy way to not just help your company, but to help the environment too.

Online Marketing Technology
No matter what online marketing product or service you choose to promote your business, or how slick your system is, without PEOPLE, it will not be successful. When I say PEOPLE, I am not referring to purchased lists of email addresses generated by responses to SPAM or HYPE! I am referring to real live human beings with which you have developed a relationship.
In Napoleon Hill's business Bible, "Think and Grow Rich," he identifies the power that results from developing relationships with others as the "Master Mind" principle. He defines this principle as the "coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose." He instructs you to "Ally yourself with a group of as many people as you may need for the creation and carrying out of your plan, or plans, for the accumulation of money" by making use of the "Master Mind" principle.
Whether you're a newbie or a seasoned online marketing Guru, surrounding yourself with like-minded people who have a common interest is critical to the growth and ongoing success of your business, and it always will be.

Technology in Your Business
Unified Communications (UC) offers such a solution and has recently evolved to become even more efficient and cost effective in the enterprise contact center environment, regardless of whether you have one or a dozen call centers. When you factor in the need to handle thousands of calls a day in addition to other voice communication needs of a business, UC voice technology offers that simple but well-rounded solution.
Session Initiated Protocol (SIP) UC solutions are designed to act as the center of a company's voice technology, including servicing internal contact centers. This technology offers peak efficiency, but also keeps costs at a very manageable level for all businesses regardless of size. When a call center experiences a shortfall in its ability to conduct business and effectively communicate, a large number of potentially valuable customers could be lost in the process. Business centers are the heart of the business enterprise universe, and it makes good business sense to integrate voice technology that allows the call centers to evolve and grow with the business as the company itself evolves and grows with its customer base.

Google Apps for Business
The future of Google Apps looks rosy with more and more businesses migrating to the cloud. The recent news about that Spanish banking giant BBVA is to roll out Google Apps for Business is a great boost to the future of cloud computing and sets a clear precedent for other large organisations considering whether or not to adopt Google Apps. The UK government is another big player joining the cloud. This January the Government expects to open the G-Cloud "app store" and have 50 accredited products in place by the end of this year. The G-Cloud is the government's formal channel for procuring cloud services. With this kind of endorsement from security experts, we expect the general level of confidence in the security of cloud solutions to increase significantly during 2012.
The launch of the Chromebook will only accelerate the adoption of web-based applications such as Google Apps for Business. Chromebook promises a more secure environment than the traditional PC and represents the next stage in Googles enterprise collaboration. The unique feature of the Chromebook is that they operate entirely in the cloud and therefore do not contain an internal hard drive. With all information stored directly in the cloud it takes universal access to the next level. A great security feature of the Chromebook is that if the Chromebook happens to fall into the wrong hands, the data is safe and secure on the cloud. Other features which set it apart from others counterparts are that it is very lightweight and portable; it has a very impressive eight-second start up and an instant resume feature, and a battery that will last throughout an entire workday.

Reasons to Use Technology
Technology has undergone a great change in the last century. People who were born in the 1940's or 50's and are still alive today, say that some things that were deemed as not possible to be made are now used in our every day lives. This has a great effect not only on the older generation that are not used to this technology but also on the younger people who don't know what life is without it. Since computers have come into our every day lives, we have become very reliant on them. Personally or as a business it can however become difficult to keep up with constant technology changes.
Affording all of the different technological equipment needed to run a successful household or business can be a struggle. After the global financial problems, people and businesses are more limited that ever before. Traditional lenders are generally very wary today when it comes to lending out a lot of money for businesses wanting to expand. The big problem that all business involved with technological equipment face, is the constant need to update this equipment. Equipment has always been changing but particularly since the invention of computers is it very important for a business to have up-to-date equipment.
Technological equipment can include new computer systems, routing software and safety equipment. Audio visual, telecommunications, and computer peripherals are examples of other essential equipment a business needs to function properly. To operate in the fast-lane, businesses must have all of this equipment in tip-top shape. This can be easier said than done however because of the extremely high costs that are generally involved with this highly technical equipment. In today's highly-competitive business environment, we must have the best equipment in order to keep clients and offer a good service.

Technology Companies
The internet has resulted in a shift in our buying patterns and a decline in sales tax revenues. With our current tax system and the nexus rules as outlined above, an out-of-state retailer (translation - a retailer without nexus in the state) selling goods to a consumer or business over the internet is not required to collect sales tax. It is the buyer's responsibility to self-assess the tax and voluntarily remit use tax to the state. Most businesses are aware of this nuance but many consumers are not.
States ensure compliance with these laws through business audits; however, the states don't have the bandwidth, nor is it practical, to audit every consumer. So instead of going after the consumer, states are looking to implement taxing rules that require the out-of state business to collect the tax.
This is why "affiliate nexus", and the "Amazon Law" or "click through nexus" have evolved. These are ways in which states have tried to use the existing nexus standards to require out-of state retailers to collect the tax that otherwise would not have been collected. The typical scenario occurs when an out-of-state business forms a relationship with an in-state business (often referred to as an affiliate) for the sole purpose of customer referrals via a connection to the out-of-state business's website. For this referral, the in-state business receives some type of commission or other consideration. The relationship established through the affiliate programs creates nexus for the out-of-state business, creating an obligation to collect and remit local sales tax. Multiple states including Illinois and California have introduced recent affiliated nexus legislation mainly targeting large internet retailers such as Amazon, hence the title "Amazon Law". In reaction to this legislation, Amazon has dropped their affiliate programs in most of these states. By dropping the affiliate programs, the company intends to terminate its nexus with the state and avoid prospective sales tax collection responsibility. However, this can be problematic as most states deem nexus to exist for a period of at least twelve months subsequent to the activity that created nexus.
The State of New York has passed legislation, called the "commission-agreement provision," that creates a rebuttable presumption that a person (seller) making sales of tangible personal property or services is soliciting business through an independent contractor or other representative if the seller enters into an agreement with a New York resident under which the resident, for a commission or other consideration, directly or indirectly refers potential customers, whether by a link on an internet website or otherwise, to the seller (click through nexus). The presumption applies if the cumulative gross receipts from sales by the seller to customers in the state who are referred to the seller by all residents with this type of agreement with the seller is in excess of $10,000 during the preceding four quarterly periods ending on the last day of February, May, August and November. The presumption may be rebutted by proof that the resident with whom the seller has an agreement did not engage in any solicitation in New York on behalf of the seller that satisfies the nexus requirement of the U.S. Constitution during the four preceding quarterly periods. N.Y. Tax Law 1101(b)(8)(vi).
Technology companies should review their affiliate programs and understand which states, specifically, have "Amazon Laws", "affiliate nexus" rules, or "Click-Through Nexus" rules. This is a constantly changing area that requires close monitoring. At the time of publication, California passed a 1-year repeal of their "Amazon Law".

Technology on Business
Technology has really changed the manner in which we communicate drastically. Almost everyone nowadays has a mobile phone and most feel they have lost part of themselves whenever they forget their mobile phones at home. Text messaging and Email have also changed our way of interaction from day to day. Technology is very entrenched to the extent of one colleague having to email another co-worker who is seated five or so feet away. People that are far apart from each other can also communicate effectively and efficiently courtesy of technology.
The effect of technology on business has been tremendous. National and international business has been made a reality by technology. Nowadays people are able to trade with others that are hundreds of miles away and even make and receive payments online and all these is supported by the power of technology. Nowadays it is possible to send and receive mail in a matter of seconds while in the past; it could have taken months for a message to be conveyed from one person to the other.
People have become very dependable on technology nowadays; it is no longer just a means of accomplishing work. The effect of technology on business has been amazing too. Technology has made quite a large number of people to get addicted to it such that when it "goes down", they are at a loss on what to do next. I can only hope to be around in the next few decades so that I get to see how man will be affected by technology.

Vertical Handoff Technology
The structure of communication networks has markedly evolved to comprise a complex interaction between wired and wireless networking systems. Wired networks are often implemented when the mobility of the communicating user is not a primary concern. On the other hand, the development of the model of traveling professionals has emphasized the popularity of the wireless models of networks that are rather convenient to this type of roaming users.
Researching various innovative wireless technology models is steadily aimed at catering the demands of the growing sector of roaming users. Restriction of the mobility of roaming users within confined zones is no more attracting users; accordingly, connecting users as they roam across different wireless service providers has increasingly gained popularity.
The most pivotal factor that guarantees uninterrupted call connectivity is that a user's call session shouldn't be influenced as he/she traverses various wireless networks. The construction of wireless networks today should be based on the concept that today's designs have to be formulated to blend with emerging technologies and networks to cope with an increasing user's demands. The technology that is utilized to hand over a user from a wireless network to another smoothly without markedly disrupting the service is known as vertical handoff. Handover is a term that is occasionally used instead of handoff.
Technically speaking, despite vertical handoff technology, roaming from a wireless network to another will usually be accompanied by minor disruptions to the services conveyed to the roaming user. These disruptions are due to many administrative, technical and other factors that are unique for each one of the various access technologies utilized in deploying wireless networks. Nevertheless, handoff technology is aimed at delivering a service with minor disruptions that is often referred to as a "seamless service".

Advances in Writing Software
If you're an individual who has to do a lot of writing for work or school, you've probably heard of writing software. This software can help many individuals, including those who cannot use their hands, use computers with ease. In the past writing software has gotten a bad reputation for being inaccurate and difficult to manage. While this may have been true while the software was in its infancy, advances in these products have made writing all the easier.
These programs have come a long way, even within the last few years. It is now easier to find, purchase, and utilize for every day practices. This software changes the way a user can interact with his or her computer, turning their voice into their keyboard as well as their mouse. Earlier attempts at comprehensive writing software required the speaker to adjust their speech in order to get the most out of the product. Nowadays, these programs are intelligent enough to not only understand more accents, word groupings, and languages; they can also learn to follow the speaking of a particular person.
In addition, the writing software programs have been updated to work with many different programs. There is now dictation software designed for specific needs. For example, whether you use a Mac or a PC, you will find different programs that run with the tailored commands for your computer. They have also been adjusted, so that you can use them with the standard writing programs. All in all, these changes and developments ensure that using writing software is as easy and comfortable as possible.
There are even some surprising benefits to using dictation software for your everyday needs. In addition to encouraging ones vocal and organization skills, the increased writing software understanding allows for quicker and more accurate note taking. Getting your thoughts and ideas down with such speed and effortlessness can make projects go by smoother and with less hassle. This increases productivity and allows you more time and freedom for reaching your goals.
Because of the advances in writing software, individuals may find that they can even get work done when they are not at home or in front of their desks. With training and an appropriately sensitive microphone, these programs can even dictate from prerecorded sources. This means you can double your efficiency by verbalizing your plans at one point while not in your office, returning to said office to write, and then using your recorder while you are away again. Thanks to the advancements in these products, it is almost as if you can be two places at once!
In conclusion, writing software is much like any other kind of software to date. It has been studied and improved upon throughout the years. Even though there have been many leaps and bounds in its understanding and usefulness, there is always room for improvement. While the software itself is now responsive, time-saving, and easy to work with, in the future it can only get better. Advancements in technology will undoubtedly continue to improve word processing for years to come.

Network Technology Improvements
A high-speed Internet link is a good choice for outworkers. It is easy to install in remote offices and is also available in many hotels. Occasionally, asynchronous dialup links are the one and only remote access solution accessible to travelers. Personnel who travel can use a laptop with a modem and the current telephone net to connect to the enterprise.
Wide area network connections at teleworker sites can use the following technologies: Asynchronous dialup, ISDN BRI, Cable modems, DSL, Wireless and satellite, VPN, Traffic Flow.
Traffic flow on a net is analogous to the car traffic flow on metropolitan streets. Vehicles move from one place to another throughout the city. Data traffic created from applications moves from one place in the net to another. The route is usually defined by a Net Layer TCP/IP address. Depending on the quality of service policies configured in the net, the route can be influenced by additional factors like Transport Layer source and destination port numbers. Let's say, a host sends a request for a shared folder to a server in one traffic flow. The server examines the request and if the user has the expected permissions, returns the data to the user in another traffic flow.
Traffic Control
Without a method of traffic control, like traffic signs or alternative roads to retain the flow, traffic on the highways becomes congested. Nets also need a path to regulate traffic flows. Quality of service mechanisms are created to guarantee the smooth traffic flow of application data traffic on the net.
Traffic flow is very important for all the networks and this is what really differentiates a good for a bad network.

For the best Sharp printer, you can hold over 8,000 sheets inside at a time while shooting out over 80 pages per minute. You better hope you clicked on the right document to print! With large quantities shuffling out, they offer you multiple finishing options to include in your prints to ensure your approval.
Complete your printer setup with the supplies it needs. Inks and toners can most likely be found just an aisle or two past the place where you found your printer. OEM companies produce brand new toner and ink for all Sharp products. However, supplies can become very expensive for everyday users. An alternative to consider is buying in bulk, a simple saver that compatible toner and ink companies offer people. While toner and ink remain high quality, the production with the use of recyclables allows for an inexpensive sale. Individually you find Sharp specific compatible products or in large sums as listed above. Thinking ahead and buying your supplies in bulk can cut the individual cost down by a third. By setting your new Sharp printer up with the right supplies you will never regret any part of the purchase.
A good way to begin your search is by deciding on how quick you need your products to be. Let's first unveil all of the printers Sharp offers that will print anywhere from under 20 to over 40 pages per minute. The lower end, 20 ppm average, products will still give a quick speed and other positive features. Products can hold large quantities of paper and send your documents to any user connected to the printer. Easy read display screens allow for you to view documents and use the zoom button when needed. Mid-range products, 30 ppm average, will give you even more freedom. They hold more paper for faster print jobs and will sort or reverse documents as requested. Some models will come with build-in keyboards for easy data input. The upper range, 40 ppm average, can not just print quickly, but they can put the final touches on your product. Stacking and stapling are often boring, timely tasks so Sharp printers are made to help you with these undesirable jobs.

Vertical Handoff Technology and the Development of Wireless Network Technologies
In order to achieve a seamless or a near seamless service, cooperation of a group of processes at many layers of the utilized protocols stack is necessary to be achieved in a holistic manner which represents a great technical challenge. The unstoppable strive for more advanced technologies to overcome such challenges has led to the advent of many variable types of wireless technologies. That's why it is quite obvious why the vertical handoff technology has become more essential and will continue to be a center of attraction as newer services and technologies are continuously proliferating within the market of wireless networking.
Seamless mobility is pivotal for an omnipresent computing experience yet it demands a group of network management operations to prevent degradation of the service. Handoff management is an essential part of different network management strategies.

5 Ways Sling Technology Makes Watching Mobile TV Possible
Ever since the 1950's when the television industry started, people have loved to watch TV and have wanted to be able to watch it anywhere. When TV was still analog, all the way through the early 2000s, people would take small black and white TV's that were battery powered when they'd go camping and spend quite a bit of time fiddling with it to get a signal. Today, however, watching mobile TV virtually anywhere you go is a snap, all because of sling technology.
A Slingbox or Sling adaptor connects between your satellite TV system and the internet to "sling" streaming video across the net. Anywhere you have an internet connection, you can access the content on your DVR and even watch your TV subscription anywhere regardless if you have it built into your DVR or it's a separate device. Here are 5 ways you can watch TV anywhere, anytime you want:
1. Since you'll be able to watch TV on any internet connected device, if you've got your laptop at a hotel on a trip, you'll still be able to watch your shows and catch your local news, even if you're at a hotel half way around the world.
2. You can actually watch TV on your smart phone anywhere you can get a signal, especially with the speeds you can now get on cell phones for transferring data and the advent of 3G and 4G technology. There are apps for the iPhone and Android phones that put your TV right in the palm of your hand. This means if you're in a bus or on a train, you can still catch the morning news or keep track of the stock market.
3. With a tablet PC and Wi-Fi, you can still watch TV everywhere in your home. You don't have to have a dedicated TV in every room anymore, all you have to do is carry the tablet and you'll never have to miss a second of your favorite show.
4. When the weekend comes, one problem is that the chores still have to be done. Cars need to be maintained and yards need to be mowed but getting outside and relaxing is important too. So you don't have to miss one single play; you can even strap a tablet PC to the steering wheel of the riding mower.
5. On long trips, as consistent as cell phone coverage has gotten, the kids can still keep themselves entertained watching TV on smart phones and 3G/4G enabled tablets and even watching the movies you've recorded for them on the DVR. They will have their time filled with entertainment instead of having to say "Are we there yet?" the whole trip.
The restrictions with watching mobile TV have been removed with sling technology. No longer are you stuck in situations where you can't watch your shows, can't watch the game and are bored waiting for a flight or whatever. Regardless if it's a Wi-Fi signal at a restaurant, in your hotel room or the airport or even if it's on a bus with a smart phone, you will have TV as long as you have an internet connection. Your TV, your way.

How the Economy and Technology Are Changing Our News
When the economy started tanking in 2008, it wasn't just homeowners that were put out on the street. Journalists were too, by the thousands.
Michael Mandel estimated on Bloomberg Business Week in September 2011 that roughly 20,000 journalists were lost in just one year. That's around a 20% loss across the board. A fifth of the workforce, gone just like that.
Like many industries, journalists that survived cutbacks at television stations, radio stations and newspapers were left to pick up the slack of lost colleagues. The news cycle and story count wasn't going to suffer because of the dramatic drop in budgets and work force.
With less staffing in most newsrooms across the country, a great need developed for new technology and delivery platforms that could counter-act the problems of deep staff and financial cuts.
Fast forward to today...
THE DRIVING FORCE OF NEW MEDIA DELIVERY: YOU!
That's right, as big as media is today, there is still an audience news organizations pay attention too. In the past five years media platforms have grown from traditional delivery methods like television, radio and newspaper to internet, RSS news feeds, social media and blogs.
The proliferation of media into new platforms was driven by the habits of watchers, listeners and readers. The media's audience no longer needs to watch at a certain time or buy a newspaper. They get what they want when they want it in just a couple of minutes from a laptop, tablet or mobile device. Online delivery gives newsrooms a global audience and the ability to increase advertising revenue from the constant demand of online content. The faster the news, the more virally it can spread.
Everyone wins, right?
HOW OUR NEWS IS CHANGING
New media platforms are speeding up the delivery of news at an unprecedented rate. In an "I gotta have it and I need it now" age, media organizations today can publish news to its audience in not just minutes, but seconds.
Subscribers to various news wire services can turn 1000 words of wire copy into a compact 250 word article and post it almost instantly. To do this, media doesn't have to make a phone call, perform a background check or even make sure the story was properly vetted.
Updates or "teases" to coverage on Twitter and Facebook can be posted in seconds and can be very powerful statements framing the context of the story a reader or watcher is following.
Finally, many media organizations today allow viewers to send in pictures and video of stories they may come across. This kind of mobile technology has opened the door to stories none of us may have ever heard about.
The speed of news today is convenient and powerful, but it also has drawbacks.
THE PROBLEM
As news delivery changes, more and more reporters are relying on other news and police reports to quickly "source" the information they publish to get it out. The ethical process of reporting a story is already tarnished by this stage. Here's why:
FIRST: Police and Government generally aren't subject to libel or defamation actions. Police reports carry a lot of power in media and in some organizations, at least initially, are not questioned.
NEXT: Media can take a police report and site it as "fact" without legally needing to contact the subject of the story to get their side. As long as the information published comes from a police report and is properly attributed, media is generally protected from libel and defamation.
MEDIA ON MEDIA: When one media organization sites another media organization's information, they most likely never took time to look into the story or the particular element on its own (the reason they site/attribute another entity or one they aren't partnered with).
THE RUB: Media organizations usually have legal departments or attorney's on-call year-round ready to protect the company from lawsuits. Some media even carry insurance that covers them in the event of a lawsuit. Even if an irresponsible media organization loses a libel or defamation case the chances are almost 100% the ruling would be reversed on appeal. The majority of case-law from Appellate Courts to The Supreme Court overturns cases on the basis of free speech under The First Amendment.

Computers and Technology: Mobile Computing Article Category
There's no question that at the start of 2012, the smartphone market is still being dominated by Google's Android platform and Apple's iOS; together they control over three-quarters of the total smartphone market share. However, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system intends to steal some of the two mobile giants' users away with its critically acclaimed and uniquely designed interface. Microsoft began releasing full touch-screen smartphones around the same time as Google and Apple, but their early devices were no match for the usability of Androids or iPhones. With Mango, the most recent update released for WP7, Microsoft's mobile platform is as visually impressive, high-powered, and user-friendly as any Android or iOS device. So what does the future hold for WP7? Can Microsoft succeed in the world of smartphones, even with Google and Apple's seemingly perpetually growing market strongholds?
A recently leaked "road map" from Microsoft shows that they intend to release a minor update to WP7 in the second quarter of 2012 which has been dubbed "Tango." Analysts expect this update to be devoted to smartphones on the lower end of the price spectrum, an area where iPhones are nowhere to be found and where Android powered phones are often criticized as cheap and buggy. If Microsoft can successfully release an update that allows for consumers to afford a quality-smartphone on a budget, they will be able to attract a large number of new buyers.
The road map also projects a late 2012 update called "Apollo." Allegedly, this update will be more in a more similar vein to the Mango release in the sense that it will be a drastic and encompassing update. In fact, a Nokia vice president said that although it was only being released a year after the successful Mango update, it would be a "very different game" than the current build of Windows Phones. There are analysts who speculate that this could mean the new update will transform Windows Phone 7 into Windows Phone 8, utilizing the upcoming Microsoft operating system.
It's incredibly unlikely that Microsoft will knock Google and Apple off the top of the mobile market overnight, but critics agree: the Mango update to Windows Phone 7 makes Microsoft's smartphones into a legitimate competitor to the two mobile gurus. If the future updates to Windows Phone continue to improve upon the already critically hailed device, there's no doubt Microsoft will continue to assert a share of the mobile marketplace and perhaps introduce an increase in competition for Google and Apple.

Social Media at Work: Where's the Line
Business owners constantly have to come to grips with developments in IT services, especially as it relates to maintaining security and up-to-date virus protection. But over the last few years with the increasing presence of social media sites and the almost fanatical usage of Facebook and Twitter, a new issue is emerging.
There is no doubting the popularity of these sites, and it seems that more and more emerge every week. In fact, Wikipedia lists over 160 current sites without including dating and specialist community sites.
Employers have to face the difficulty of managing employee access to these sites during work time, without impacting on morale and without ignoring the possible business benefits that can be derived in using social media sites.
On the downside, businesses are faced with the following issues:
Staff are more likely to accept a 'managed use' policy which outline the do's and don'ts. Here are some simple education tips.

On the downside, businesses are faced with the following issues:
- Employees can be tempted to spend hours at a time updating their Facebook pages thereby reducing their normal productive output. Added to this is the complication that social media messaging can interrupt workflow constantly throughout the day making it nearly impossible for an employee to complete normal tasks on time.
- Banning their use in the workplace has already been shown to be ineffective and in fact some surveys suggest that employees spend more time working out strategies to get around the bans!
- It is easy to set up a business fan page on Facebook to promote your business and employees can be encouraged to refer clients to it so they can keep up with your latest product releases or special offers.
- Staff who use social media sites during work time do so in a way that is equivalent to a casual chat. They are part of everyday life so employers may as well embrace them.
Staff are more likely to accept a 'managed use' policy which outline the do's and don'ts. Here are some simple education tips.
- Provide details about what type of information is appropriate to share on social media sites so the company secrets and other commercially sensitive issues can be protected.
- Demonstrate to staff that the company policy is in line with other organisations so they won't feel they are being singled out or restricted in any way.
- Train staff in how to use these sites to further your company's image and how to engage customers in the most appropriate way.

How To Identify a License Plate Search and Avoid Getting Ripped Off
Consumers are getting tricked out of their money by a proliferation of online scamming websites that make misleading or downright false advertisements claiming to provide services to help locate the owner of a vehicle by supposedly processing a reverse license plate number look-up. Luckily, most of those sites share common traits and warning signs that consumers can keep an eye out for before ever giving out personal information or paying money out to a scammer.
Warning Sign #1: The Site Does Not Have Any Contact Information
A legitimate business usually makes it easy for customers to get in touch. If you come across a site that has no contact details, be very wary because it's an indication that they don't consider customer satisfaction much of a priority and that tells you it may not be a real business. Look for businesses that put some form of informative contact information online, like a mailing address or a phone number. Similarly, if a website does provide a phone number, that's a good indication that it is not a scam. Call it to make sure a real person answers.
Warning Sign #2: Promises of Instant Results
If you have a license plate number and you want to verify or find the car's owner, chances are good that you are not interested in anything other than current, up-to-date records. That means the record should be culled from records maintained by the state's DMV. Registration records are protected by privacy laws and are therefore not available to the public for instant searches. Individuals can order a look-up and the DMV will check to make sure it is for a permissible purpose. It typically takes at least a business day. If you come across a site promising instant results, it's likely that it is making false claims and is not a trustworthy source.
Warning Sign #3: No Credentials
Driver information is protected by law and is not publicly available to just anyone with internet access and a license plate number. If you have a DPPA-compliant reason for requesting vehicle ownership information, then you want to look for a licensed and insured investigative firm. State licensed private investigators are subject to regulation and oversight and are therefore, much less likely to get away with scamming consumers. Select investigators have access to state DMV records and can often provide accurate results within a day.
These warning signs are simple ways to protect yourself from giving out personal information and money to scammers.

How Modern Day Technology Can Work Against Us
We all have twenty four hours in a day, so why is it that some people manage to fit so much in to their day, while others struggle to do the same amount in several days. We all have different methods to organise our time, personally I have always worked with a daily list, as each task is completed I will cross it off.
One tip is to put a few extra tasks on the list and if you manage to complete these as well as your main list then treat these extras as a bonus, or a couple less things to do the following day.It can be very satisfying to know you are ahead of the game by just doing that little bit more each day.
Sometimes we also need to look at areas where we are wasting our time. I run a small one man business and recently I realised how much time I was spending in the morning reading emails. I would arrive at my office, get a coffee, sit down at my computer & start going through the messages. Of course this is an important job, there may be orders or enquiries to deal with, but we all know there is also a lot of non-urgent stuff in there too, a message from a friend, a joke or funny attachment, following a link that can then send you off surfing the net, time will really get eaten up if you are not careful.
So now I only deal with the important business stuff, the rest can wait until lunchtime or in the evening when I'm relaxing at home, this has probably saved me another hour every day.
Getting in to work 30 minutes earlier each day is another great way to use your time well. I started doing this when I realised my car journey was actually quicker because I was getting on the road before the parents taking their children to school and way before all the 9-5 workers hit the road, as well as arriving at the office earlier my journey was also less stressful missing the traffic jam, so I felt fresher and ready to face the day ahead.
The telephone can also be a great time waster, keep conversations short and to the point this will save you lots of time in your day, the same goes for text messages. Most new technology is designed to make our lives easier, but if not used wisely it can also take up too much time, we are all probably suffering with information overload in this modern world and most of us need to cut back on our thirst for it. Always remember the technology is there to give us more quality time, not to take it away.

3 Ways Technology Has Changed the World For Home Based Business Owners
I love that I have been born in this day and age and I don't know how I could have lived at any other time in history. New technological advances have made my life much easier as a home based business owner. I am excited by the possibilities available with technology today and excited by the thoughts of the technology that will be available very soon.
The purpose of this article is to share with you, as a fellow home based business owner, some thoughts on how current technological advances are improving the way we can run our businesses. If you are living in the past it is time to change your way of thinking and utilise technology to your own advantage.
Here are three things to think about as a work from home entrepreneur:
Social media and Web 2.0 has changed marketing- The old rules of advertising made it hard for a home based business to compete with bigger companies. The internet, through search engines, web 2.0 and social media has changed everything to the advantage of the smaller operators. Yes, large companies can use the internet but if you target your market right you can still be very successful.
Smart phones have improved people's lives- I was very late to the idea of a smart phone- even though I have worked in the industry for numerous years. But now, I don't know how I ever lived without one. I started with a BlackBerry, went to a HTC and now I could never live without my iPhone. It's just so damn convenient. I can send and receive emails, make calls, send and receive texts and there are numerous other applications that improve my life. It gives me so much time back. I can respond to a lot of emails and do work during my down time during the day. For example, I often write articles on my iPhone during the day if I am waiting at a cafe or something like that. I generally save about an hour a day.
You can run a home based business but sell to the world- The Internet, in my opinion, has had the greatest influence on mankind of all inventions. Now, with an Internet connection, I can sell my products from home to anywhere in the world. Previously as a home based business owner my target audience would most probably be limited to my surrounding suburbs.
Technology has changed the world and, as you can see from the above, there are three technological advances that have had a most dramatic effect on home based businesses.

Automating Your Business Using Technology and Custom Software Development
So here you are with your own personal business. From the very first day you open your doors you come to realize that your entire life is completely encapsulated in your organization. If you own a brick and mortar business then your entire process starts with marketing your business to your clients which then brings them in the door. At this point you greet them and find out what their needs are as they came to you for a product or service. The next step is to perform the sales of the product or service to maximize your profits with the particular product and then keep that client for future business.
The very next step is capturing your clients information as it is important to keep an ongoing record and database of your client. You will want to find out where the customer heard about you, and how they found their way to your store. Then you capture their full contact information, be sure to get the email and phone number. Some times you can guess their age and capture their gender, this can help you keep track of more specific information.
At this very point in your business you are at a cross roads, you can either take out a note pad and capture the information about each customer and then hopefully be able to efficiently reference this information in the future to try to make some kind of a strategic decision about a business purchase or a marketing strategy.
The smart way to process this sort of an encounter would be to first find a technology solution to automate this process, so you first think OK I need a point of sale system which will allow me to capture this. Then you are able to perform a cash transaction and also keep some of the data about the customer. As soon as you jump into this world you quickly realize that the point of sale software which you have chosen is not designed for your specialty of business. You then realize that you are stuck and you have made a bad business decision and you have wasted capital and resources.
So you are back at square one; here are your realistic options; you can go out and learn a basic programming language and if you are brilliant you can develop a new art within yourself and become a computer programmer. This is probably the hardest way out as you also need to run your business in the mean time. The second option: back to the drawing board and try to find another point of sale solution that can capture more information and be more inline with your specialty business. More often then not you will be forced to settle on a product that is not exactly efficient with your particular services set or business type. The final step is to go on Craigslist or Elance or other work platform to find a "programmer expert" who will possibly know what he/she is doing or take you on a roller coaster ride and leave you in the dust holding a broken unusable program.

Ditch Work and Increase Productivity - Tools For Recruiters
It was a beautiful sunny Thursday morning last week that made me want ditch work and go to the beach. And even though I'm allowed to do it once in a while (God bless people who came up with flexible work arrangements!), I still had a tiny feeling of guilt deep inside because I thought I was going to lose the day and not get much work done. Not surprisingly, being a workaholic that I am, I ended up working from the beach, and the entire day turned out to be a quite productive, yet very enjoyable endeavor, complemented by a beautiful suntan by the end of the business hours.
The big surprise was to realize how easy it is to get things done from virtually anywhere, including Coney Island beach, with the tools we have these days. So here's my list of what you can do to trade a corner office for a home office, spa office, any other kind of office you can think of.
Switch to email communication.
Your desk phone number is the first thing that stands between you and the free world beyond the office walls. Avoiding the office seems impossible when you know people will be calling you all day long. On the other hand if you use email you will know that your clients can reach you anytime anywhere, and won't have you chained to that uncomfortable chair in the office. Plus, you know you won't be interrupted during the most precious moments, like when you are feeding your favorite gold fish or getting a hot stone massage.
Get a wireless handset made for business.
Blackberry has by far the best email on-the-go solution, it makes it easy to switch between email accounts, and with the push technology you get emails seamlessly delivered to your fingertips. Many people choose iPhone, but I personally wouldn't recommend it - touch screen may seem cool, but it makes typing unnecessarily complicated. And, hey, the last thing you want to do on the beach is deal with complicated technology.
Voice it with Google voice.
It kills me when I see that so many people still don't know about Google Voice. Its concept is brilliant - you get a phone number that can be redirected to any landline or cell phone in the country, like your office number, or home phone, or your cell. So if you accidentally forget to go to work one day, your clients can be calling you on the phone within the arm's reach from the couch in your living room. And here's the best part about it - they will have no idea that instead of sweating at work you are hanging out with the mummies at the Metropolitan museum.
Let candidates look for you, not the other way around.
One fact that has been noted about the consequences of the recession is that it killed many of the minor job websites, but brought new ones that learned to deliver great value at an extremely low price. You don't have to work hard manually searching for candidates when you've spent your entire budget on a job listing on Career Builder and can't afford to place another ad anywhere else. Low posting fee websites can give you the same quality of the applicants as any major job search engine, but only for a fraction of the premium price. It's a win-win, you minimize recruitment costs and maximize time spent tasting wine at the nearby winery.
Meet people around you.
You will meet people anywhere you decide to go instead of going to work (well, unless you are heading to the Moon or that Hot Tub Time Machine movie), so make sure you make the most out of it. We all know how it works - the most perfect candidate always pops up from the most unexpected source. Just make sure they don't tell your boss they've met you at the annual swingers' convention.
No matter how much you like your work, there will always be times when you'd want to escape and do something unconventional during business hours. Luckily, modern day technology and people's mindset can easily make it happen. So why not reach productivity goals while rowing a boat in the Hamptons instead of dragging the day with trips to the office water cooler.

Generation Innovation: Disney Vibration Technology Is More "Spooky," As Workplace Change
Disney has come up with a new technology for sensitive human nerves that creates a smooth, tactile motion like someone dragging a finger across your skin. It's for a whole new level of user experience in the theater. Tech change is good, and sometimes "spooky."
Advances in technology have changed our lives so much. I recall being at the New York World's Fair in the early 60s and seeing myself in a storefront monitor as I walked by on the sidewalk. It was video; so different and a bit spooky not knowing how it might impact our lives. Because technology is faster and cheaper today, the workplace has changed. It was different when I was a young Boomer. You could say it was less spooky.
Children had a greater sense of security to play, make new friends and fend for themselves in the neighborhood. Childhood today is far more scheduled and its safety seemingly more threatened at school and near home so that each child has a cell phone for frequent check-ins. The young Boomer world was less connected through technology where as, young workers today are so connected that digital is accepted on the same level as face-to-face communication. Boomers had to go to the office to work because it was the only way to accomplish day-to-day business. The Y Generation wants flexible hours and work space because it is possible, with today's technology.
Change over time and the influence it has on individual values, attitudes and beliefs creates generational differences. These differences stir up conflict among Boomer bosses and Gen Y employees in a multi-generational workplace. Even IT departments report frustration at work with Gen Y. It can get pretty spooky unless something is done about it.
Here are 3 Steps Boomer bosses can take immediately to cut short generational conflict and keep out the spooky of workplace change.
Step #1. Deepen your understanding of generational differences, especially between Boomers and Generation Y. The topic is pretty hot right now so there is an increasing amount of information on the internet and more resources available.
Step #2. Discuss solutions for issues that arise from differences and a changing workforce. These talks should begin at the owner and management levels first. Once you have brought generational differences education to all employees and they begin to validate each others' unique characteristics, let the conversation begin there.
Step #3. Develop a change in mindset that will be necessary for leaders to be more effective at engaging Gen Y employees. It is normal for people to hang on to how things were done in the past and to believe their way is best. Get over it.
And, this action will make you more agile for understanding and welcoming the next generation of workers and their spooky generational differences.

Inventory Control Software is the Latest Technology
RFID inventory control software is the technology of the future, but it is available today. The cost of the tags keeps getting lower and lower. Right now, the cost may be comparable to your other tagging options. Regardless of the cost, it is a worthwhile investment. Here's why.
In case you are unfamiliar with the technology, radio-frequency ID tagging has been used to track wild animals and livestock for at least a couple of decades. The predecessors to the devices were used by the allies in World War II to identify aircraft as friends or foes.
It was the ability to make the tags smaller and smaller that made it feasible to use them in asset tracking. Gillette reportedly ordered 500 million of them in 2003, at a price nearly comparable to that of standard price tags and far lower than the cost of electronic inventory control tags.
Knowing that the technology is being used by large companies is great, but the small business owner, which might include you, has to wonder about affordability. If tracking your assets is an important part of your quarterly profit and loss statement, you can hardly afford to be without RFID inventory control software. There is simply nothing that is more efficient or more reliable.
If real time tracking means anything to you, there is no other system that allows for it. Most other monitoring systems are only accurate at the end of the business day or on the following day. It is not unusual to see retail employees wandering through the aisles looking for an item that the computer shows as on-hand, only to learn that it was sold earlier in the day.
In shipping businesses, the tracking devices can be used to locate various components and estimate the time that each piece will arrive. This allows the business that will receive the components to schedule personnel and be prepared when the truck comes in.
RFID tags are being used to keep track of everything from the size of an ant to the monster-sized mining equipment. With the right inventory control software in place, any company large or small can be more efficient and their books can be more accurate.
The tags may put an end to employee theft and shoplifting. The tags can be small enough to avoid detection. If they happen to make it out of the store, they can be tracked from relatively long distances.
To sum it up, inventory control software that makes use of RFID tracking is the way to go, whether your business is large, small or somewhere in between. It will help to increase your company's bottom-line profits.

When To Upgrade Voice Technology in Your Business Call Center
A single business call center is the heart of any business, particularly in today's business climate. Proactively caring for daily customer and technical support, operations, and directing internal telephone traffic, the people who operate these communication centers are one of the most important aspects of modern business. Because these are the front line of business operations and service, performing internal technology upgrades and offering staff better and more efficient voice technology will translate into improved business operations and ultimately, bottom line improvement. By not improving and adopting new and more efficient contact center voice technology, organizations are essentially hindering peak performance and the ability to proactively provide the best customer service.
New Solutions for Achieving Peak Efficiency
Considering the sheer volume of inbound and outbound calls that call centers handle daily, the size of modern enterprise-based call centers, and the number of branches that any single enterprise might operate, some business owners are finding it difficult to justify shutting down operations to make necessary technological upgrades, even for just a few hours. The solution is to find a solution that does not necessitate the shutdown of all call centers, but instead works with them to operate more efficiently and cost effective when making such improvements to their voice technology.
Making the Case for UC in Call Centers

Business Strategy Planning For the Future
The Importance of a Business Strategy.
Many business operators become so caught up in the day to day running of their business that they devote little time to considering their business strategy for the future. Yet putting a little time aside now can benefit your business significantly. While you're pre-occupied with the daily demands or minor crises of your business, things are happening in your blind spot! Advances are occurring in technology and your clients' demands for faster and more efficient service are increasing.
Meanwhile, your nearby competitor may be busy developing a business strategy for the future, determined to climb over you to the top! A little business analysis and strategic planning now might help you take the lead.
Do you want to remain competitive in your field? If you do, spend time on your business by analysing your current situation. Develop a business strategy and a technology strategy that will help your business grow and develop profitably as trends, technology and client expectations change.
Analyse Your Business.
As you analyse your business and plan your new business strategy, you'll need to consider several aspects of your business. These should include human resources, technological assets and processes, advertising methods and the needs and desires of your clientele. Are you meeting your clients' expectations? Are you taking full advantage of the Internet and all it offers? Are there new trends emerging that may require you to change your product range or upgrade the services that you offer? If there are, making those changes before your competitors do can give you a major advantage and increase your profits!
Consider your current methods of operation. Can you apply new technology to increase the efficiency of your business? Will the technology you have now be adequate in the future? Are you employees utilising your technology to the advantage of your business or do they need additional training? Technology and the changes it brings are inescapable. It advances at an ever increasing pace and for many over-worked business operators, it's only too easy to slip behind and lose touch with change. It pays for modern businesses to have a technology strategy in place to ensure they remain competitive.
Developing a Technology Strategy.
The content of your technology strategy will depend on the nature of your business - whether you sell technology or simply use it in the running of your operation. If you sell it, part of your technology strategy will be designed to ensure you keep up to date on available products. There are other things to consider too - are changes in technology likely to bring about new trends or products? Depending on the nature of your business, your strategy may include new ways of marketing your products or services, product development, plans to attend relevant conferences and expos, or simply ensuring that you're subscribed to industry publications for up to date information.
